Background
I’m an educator and consultant. Much of my work has involved helping people turn broad expectations into choices they can make in a course, a program, or an organization. As an instructor, I began seeing student work produced with AI and realized that students and faculty needed more help deciding when AI supports learning and when it takes over the work students need to do. That experience led me to create the RAFT Framework for Ethical AI Use.
Why RAFT
I see real value in AI, especially when it helps someone explore a difficult question, consider another perspective, or test an argument. The learner still needs to do the thinking. RAFT gives students a process they can use while they work: begin with their own research, use AI to extend that work, check what it produces, and make the final product their own.
I also wanted faculty to have something more useful than a general warning about misconduct. The question changes from assignment to assignment. Faculty need room to decide which work students must do themselves, where AI may help, and how students will show what they learned.
The continuing question
My work has also included quality management, workflow automation, business ethics, training, program and course design, assessment, institutional effectiveness, and accreditation and regulatory compliance.
