Faculty · The RAFT Framework for Ethical AI Use
An evidence based recommendation
Evaluate evidence, acknowledge uncertainty, and defend a recommendation.
Before
Write a 700-word memo recommending whether a campus library should extend its hours. Use three sources.
What the original hides
A polished memo alone can hide whether the student read the sources, checked their limits, or made the recommendation.
After
Recommend whether to pilot later library hours. Submit a 500–700 word memo, your initial evidence notes, and a short decision record. Use the supplied fictional packet below; do not represent it as real research.
Student process
- Research Independently First: read the packet, calculate the survey proportion, and write a provisional recommendation with two limitations before using AI.
- Augment Your Work: if you choose AI, ask it to question the limits of your recommendation. It may critique your notes but may not write the memo or add evidence.
- Fact-Check Everything: check every retained number and claim against the packet. Record one suggestion you rejected or narrowed and explain why.
- Transform Into Your Own Work: write the memo from your verified notes. Justify the scope and cost of any proposed pilot, then explain your reasoning in a brief oral or written follow-up.
Evidence to submit
Submit initial notes, the memo, a 100–150 word rationale for one revision, and a disclosure if AI was used. A no-AI route uses a peer or instructor question instead.
| Criterion | Points | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence and limits | 40 | Accurate calculations; distinguishes respondents from all students. |
| Recommendation | 35 | Reasonable scope and cost; conclusion follows from evidence. |
| Process explanation | 25 | Shows an initial position and explains a defensible revision. |
Instructor reasoning and expected checks
A three-evening pilot of two extra hours costs $240. That is a proposal, not a finding. Other justified recommendations can earn full credit. Do not award points merely for using AI.
